Four Ways You Can Keep Your Business Safe

Flood damage to your Fruita, CO, business can cause serious problems. Fortunately, there are ways to protect your building and employees from flooding. The following are four ways you can keep your business safe.

1. Create an emergency plan. Long before heavy rains or other storms are predicted, it is important to devise an emergency plan for you, your employees and your customers. Employees should know the location of emergency supplies and safe shelter-in-place spaces as well as evacuation routes. Make sure you have a way to communicate with your employees and customers so that everyone stays safe. Go over the plan and make sure everyone knows what to do. Practice emergency drills if necessary.

2. Perform routine maintenance. Keeping your building in good condition can minimize storm damage. Repair roof leaks as soon as you can, and secure any loose shingles. Make sure your gutters are clean and secure. Grade the lawn away from the building to ensure proper runoff. Remove dead limbs from trees to ensure they do not fall during a storm.

3. Install sandbags or other barriers. When heavy rain is on its way, attach plastic tarps to any area of the building you think may incur flood damage. Then place sandbags against the tarps. Make sure they are close together. Instead of sandbags, you can also use inflatable dams or other commercially-available barriers. Do not completely surround the building with sandbags or other barriers, as this could result in flood waters becoming trapped between the barrier and the exterior walls of the structure.

4. Address individual items. If possible, move documents, electronics, and other important items to higher ground. Keep digital copies of all important documents. If you have loose items outside, tie them down or bring them in.
Unfortunately, even the most well-prepared businesses can suffer flood damage. If you need help getting your business back to normal, an experienced restoration service can help.
